37 Bulwer St.
Toronto, Canada
The idea behind 37 Bulwer is to maintain the original structure and building while at the same time providing harmonic clash between the new and the old.
The final model represents three major materials in the exterior structure: The original red brick, corten steel and glass.
The original brick repesents the "old", what existed, and tells the story of the neighbourhood. At the same time the modified East side of the building, consisting of corten steel and glass creates a sensitive contrast and represents the "new".
I decided to leave the original building intact to challenge people's ideas of constantly wanting the new, of not fully understanding the beauty of heritage and I did it to show others that true creation and beauty lies in the stories that buildings tell us.
Project type: Residential, for a married client who loves history and enjoys inviting friends for dinner.
